sometimes violence is the answer.

LOGLINE

After two scrappy siblings, a sharp 9-year-old and her wary 13-year-old brother, stumble onto a predator’s porn-plastered trailer in the 1994 North Carolina woods, they’re trapped in a one-night cat and mouse chase with a violent zealot. With only a BB gun, a hunting knife, and their wits, the kids must outthink, outlast, and decide how far they’ll go, as Diana, the meek little sister, becomes the hunter in a lean Southern-gothic survival thriller.

Raise Hell is the story of Diana and her brother Luke, who, after going into the forest to find a famed trailer covered in violent pornography, become trapped in the darkening woods with madman Willy. After Luke gets taken by Willy, it is up to Diana at--at 9 years old--to rescue her brother. She must outsmart the clutches of a man whose intention is not only to reveal suppressed violence within Luke, but to smother that violence with his bare hands.

Raise Hell is a thriller propelled by visual storytelling, featuring an examination into different responses to consumed violence--from horrific, to off-putting, to joyous revenge. The audience, mirroring the characters, moves from a place of witnessing violence as a catastrophic event to cheering for it in the end. We learnwith the kids onscreen that there is a time and place for self-defense. A darkly fun, deeply resonating southern gothic thriller, destined to be an indie darling. Watch the meek inherit the earth in real time.

WRITER/DIRECTOR

Gabriel_edited.jpg

Gabriel is an award winning lesbian writer and director who has been making films for over fifteen years. She was inspired to write Raise Hell by a real childhood event, when her brother brought her to a trailer in the woods of North Carolina that had been covered by violent adult pornography. She always wondered who the trailer belonged to while its disturbing impact remained lastingly in the back of her mind. This along with one other occurrence of being lost in the dark woods, eventually being found scared and alone by hunters, are the true events that inspired this story. Gabriel believes it is important to tell stories in which children become their own saviors, because many adults were never rescued as children. Stories like Raise Hell heal inner wounds that, without art, can remain unreachable.
